THERMOCOUPLES |
|
Thermocouples utilise the Seebeck effect - that the difference in temperature between two junctions of dissimilar metals or alloys in the same circuit will produce an EMF in that circuit. To function correctly, a thermocouple needs two junctions; a measuring junction and a reference junction. In practice the reference or cold junction is usually provided within the measuring instrument. If a thermocouple is to be extended, wire of the same composition as the thermocouple or special compensating cables must be used to avoid errors in readings. Whilst any combination of metals will produce an EMF, certain types that produce significant mV EMFs have evolved as standards. Each of these has its own operating temperature range and accuracy :- |
